What is Klondike Solitaire
Most readers will have heard of "solitaire" simply because that's a game that Windows gives you for free. Others may have heard of solitaire diamond jewelry, where "solitaire" simply means "one" or "single". The word "Klondike" just seems to complicate things.
Well, the complication is unnecessary. Klondike solitaire is the very game that you see when you click "solitaire" from your Windows Programs menu. It is a card game designed for one person hence "solitaire" and depends heavily on luck, though the rules are fairly simple.
The game setup contains a deck of cards called stock facing downwards on the top left, four blank spaces called foundations on the top right, and stacks of one to seven cards with the last card on each stack turned up. These seven stacks are dealt by dealing seven cards, then skipping the first card and dealing on top of the next six, skipping the first again and dealing on five cards, and so on until only one card is dealt on the rightmost stack. The topmost card on each stack is turned upwards, and the remaining cards form the stock.
The objective of the game is to get all the cards into the foundation stacks, which are usually arranged according to suits in an Ace to King order. You have to do this by unearthing the required cards from the stack and the stock.
The stacks can be arranged in cascades of alternating colors, from Kings downwards to Aces. Putting a black card on a red one or vice versa is forbidden, and so is putting higher valued cards on lower valued ones. You can only use the topmost card of each stack, and cards from the stock, to form the cascades. Every time you move a card, the one below it is automatically turned upwards. Empty columns can be filled by Kings.
The stock is used by players when there are no possible moves that can be made using the cards in the stacks. Trust me, this happens quite often.
The stock can be used in a few different ways. Typically, one card is turned up at a time to put into the "wastepile". The wastepile can be turned over, thus replenishing your stock, an infinite number of times until you win the game or give up. In other variation, two or three cards can be turned up at once, and only the topmost card from those two or three can be used on that turn. Yet another form of variation is the "quick" mode, where the wastepile can be turned back only three times, or cannot be restored at all.
There, you have it. Keep arranging the cards in red black alternating cascades suits don't matter here and then move them into the foundation stacks when you gain access to Aces, Twos, Threes and so on.

Who was Hal Chase? As his biographer, Don Dewey, points out in The Black Prince of Baseball, nobody really knew Hal Chase, not even his descendants.(1) Not exactly a touchy feely individual, Chase wasn't close to anybody. He cut a dashing figure, but the figure was empty. You could be best mates with him, until you found out everybody else was too. A gambler, a womanizer, a manipulator and the finest fielding first baseman in the AL during his career, admittedly Chase led the league in errors a few years, but the errors belie his efforts to create outs. Making failed dives for the ball and whisking throws to unready teammates counted as errors. The press loved his gall and charming personality. They ate it up, and blamed others if Chase's image was tarnished.

In 1913, the errors of Chase's ways caught up with him. A mainstay with the Highlanders/Yankees, Chase had the New York Americans owner, Frank Farrell, wrapped around his finger. Chase threatens to jump teams; Farrell raises his salary. Chase doesn't like the new manager; Farrell deems Chase the new manager. After Chase failed to produce a winning record, Farrell recruited Frank Chance, the successful, tough as nails former manager of the Chicago Cubs to lead the Yankees. Chance found Chase as a detriment to the Yankees. Aided by his stature in the baseball community, Chance pressured Farrell to trade Chase or else. Farrell acquiesced and traded Chase to the White Sox for two bench warmers.
Chase stayed with the White Sox for one year, then went to the Federal League for two years, then the Reds, then the Giants, burning bridges, throwing games and ruining careers as he went. The beginning of the end of Price Hal's glam reputation began with his trade to the White Sox, and the cards from the 1912 National Game card game and the 1913 Tom Barker card game depict the transition. The two games share all of their baseball images, except for Chase's card. He was a big enough star then to warrant the new card, but, due to an increasingly soiled reputation, he never found a stable baseball home again.

When a duelist enters a tournament, they expect one thing, a fun time. When a winning duelist enters a tournament they expect that the judges will be fair, know the rules, and be unable to be bought. This is the truth.
As of today, I'm giving a BAD review for this store, and if you keep reading, you'll know why.
I'm a duelist since day one. The day the first cards hit the shelves in America, I had them. I played the game, I loved the Anime, and I still do. I watched it's subbed version before the show was aired on American television thanks to the internet. I am a former judge. I judged over several tournaments in my early years before Yugioh Wikia became the standard for rulings. I am a former UDE rep. I demoed the product, got people to buy it, and loved everything about the game. I am former tournament runner, as for three years I ran the tournaments at the Irondequoit mall in Rochester New York. It was a non for profit tournament for those who couldn't make their way across the city every week to attend the ones held at Millennium. This was back in the days when Millennium was the standard. When Edward Fear owned it. It definitely was the golden age of the game.
Now that that's out of the way, allow me if I may, to tell you how things were run by Millennium games and hobbies during those years. I remember it fondly. Entering the store, you'd see a swarm of people, players of both Magic the Gathering, and Yugioh. The competition was intense, and the duels were honorable. There was a judge on staff, one that got paid to do his job. It was fun, it was competitive, it was clean. Yes there were thefts. Yes there was the occasional outburst of violence.
Let me tell you how it is now. Entering the store, you'd see a swarm of people, players of both Magic the Gathering, and Yugioh. The competition is not intense. The duels are rigged to who the judge favors. The judge is some kid who supposedly has his certification, who makes sure that only his friends win. It's boring, it's dull, and it's dirty. There are too many thieves. Don't even ask about the violence.
I personally cannot enter the store any longer, as it almost immediately kicks my claustrophobia into high gear. The storefront is now cramped, and confined as they've tried expanding into Video games and have tried to put their card games and hobbies on the back burner.
When you Asked EDWARD FEAR about a ruling, he'd know, back in the day. He knew the game like the back of his hand, and could make an accurate calling, and he could tell you the value of a card off of the top of his head. HE KNEW HIS JOB AND DID IT. He may have been a complete asshole, talking down to everyone, but honestly, I can see past that. He was an honorable man who I will miss being in the industry. He set the standard, and his replacement falls short, by about a thousand miles.
Let's look at the current owner. His name is Terry. Refuses to be photoed, interviewed or asked questions. Doesn't know shit about the game, and is obviously only in the business to make money. You can't get to know the guy, because he doesn't talk. He tries not to deal with anyone but his employees and where Ed may have talked down to you, Terry doesn't talk at all.
After dealing with Terry, I definitely miss Ed.
Parents, Teens, Young Adults, Adults, This is my call to you. Before I give those final memorable words.

If America has discovered one thing, it's the value of cashing in on other people's ideas. Take Yu Gi Oh, for example. This franchise is centered around a Japanese comic book where teenagers play a collectible card game to decide the fate of the Earth, and with a storyline like that, merchandise wasn't too far behind. Not only did they make a card game based on the game in the comic, but they also made books, video games, and even a full fledged animated series. This was good for America, because around this time the Pokemon juggernaut had lost some of its strength, and investors are always on the hunt for fresh juggernauts to harness. Of course, success breeds imitators. Yu Gi Oh was no different. Soon, bright and flashy remixes of other children's games appeared, like Beyblade with tops and Battle B Daman with marbles. (I think Bakugan is based on some form of children's drinking game. I believe this is the case because, every time I watch the cartoon, I'd rather be drinking.) Like Yu Gi Oh, these franchises mutated classic games beyond all recognition with exaggerated gameplay and wide eyed protagonists in a world where culture is defined by how well you twist your toy.
Is this what the classics are doomed to become? Have our children grown so jaded that the simple toys of yesteryear fail to provide any sort of entertainment at all?
Here are a few of my ideas to renovate classic children's games for a new generation. With the appropriate cartoon or comic book tie in, these ideas will make me very rich. But, I'm willing to share, so if any of these ideas appeal to television producers/toy makers/rich and beautiful widows, please meet with me as soon as possible so we can discuss my future.
Pogs. In a world where pogs are the most popular game on the planet, a young, spiky haired boy named Ryo fights to earn the title of Supreme Infinite King of PogBattlers. To succeed, he'll need to master his pog slamming skills alongside his trademark pog, Oversized Dragon. At his side is his large breasted kinda on and off girlfriend Mizuki and Chim Chim, his hilarious monkey sidekick. At his back is Valius, androgynous and long haired rival who seeks the title of Supreme Infinite King at all costs. Ryo must train hard if he hopes to surpass his rival and achieve his dream.
Foosball. In a world where arguments are resolved in games of foosball, a young, spiky haired boy named Akira struggles to free his world from the Grand Dark Ballers, a society of evil foosball players who use their lethal foosball skills to rule with an iron fist. To defeat them, he must use the ancient art of Foosballdo, a playing style incorporating eight sacred foosball shots that attack the vital points of any opponent's defense. Accompanying Akira on his quest is Reiko, a girl with a skirt that gets shorter in every episode, and Pinky, a large blob creature who happens to be dangerously perverted. If Akira is to save the planet, he must defeat the Four Divinist Generals before he is allowed to take on Emperor Baller himself for the fate of the world.
Solitare. In a world where monsters are captured within playing cards, a young, spiky haired boy named Byakko wants to find the Ace of Poles, the only playing card produced for the secret fifth suit of solitare. Sealed inside the Ace of Poles is the legendary Super Fantasma Phoenix to control this monster is to control the world. Aiding him in his journey is a skilled solitare player named Fuuma, who hides her affection toward Byakko by routinely beating him half to death. However, the evil mage King Joker is also on the hunt for the Ace of Poles, and with an army of mind slaves at his command, it's going to take a lot of exciting and gruesome monster solitare battles to get to the end. It all leads up to a final confrontation with King Joker, where the Ace of Poles and Fuuma's life hangs in the balance.
(NOTE: This idea applies to the original Japanese version. Before bringing it to America, it would have to be heavily censored and revised in order to market it to children. All instances of death would be erased, scenes of violence would be cut and refered to as "noogie time", and character dialogue would be rewritten to make it more suitable for young viewers. Therefore, we could expect the English version to hold approximately forty nine card puns per episode.)
These are but a few of my brilliant ideas. I'm confident that, using this basic structure, even backgammon can become exciting and viable. If you'd like to learn more get rich quick ideas, please send me a check in an envelope made out of $50 bills.
